Labor Day Weekend Highlights

-
-Backyard happy hour with old friends (including two pairs of soon-to-be parents (one of which just moved to Minneapolis much to our pleasure!) and two pairs of parents with newborns!)

-Long run with a favorite running buddy (Highlights included free lemonade from a rummage sale!  It was advertised on a sign and we could not resist.  I felt a little bad for indulging since it was very clear we were not about to leave with slow cooker!)

-Afternoon work/hangout date with a fun English colleague!  I really love helping teachers build websites...I should seriously get paid for this (google?  district?  who wants to pay me???!)

-Sunday morning easy run with Misha and another favorite running buddy.

-A lovely backyard dinner (basically a deconstructed lasagna with ricotta and sautéed zucchini, garlic, and tomatoes)

-A morning visit to the State Fair with my boys.  Misha's first fair!  We had a great time.  I am a big big fan of the morning fair visit.

Reading Romano's "Blending Genre, Altering Style" moved me to set down the text and pick up a pen. Except for a creative writing class or two in college, I was never encouraged as a student to stray from literary analysis or research papers in my English classes. It was so refreshing to read, "the quality of writing that I get to read is often much truer...the power of the multigenre form makes the information real" (p. 5). Looking back at my own experiences, I feel like we spent so much time exploring the writing and ideas of published authors and theorists. Clearly, there is value in that discussion, however, I think the danger is that we lose the opportunity to develop our own voices as writers and thinkers. The concept of a multigenre paper is so exciting because it encourages students to think outside of traditional boxes. Genre and The News (April 4, 2009)

My news log dated last Sunday, March 29th, tracked Fox local news at 5:30pm. To me, perhaps the most interesting aspect of my log was the amount of time spent on different news stories. The second longest news story (2 minutes exactly) was the first one: the impact of the Red River Flooding on Fargo schools. Following this story, the rest of the thirty minutes was broken into 90 to 10 seconds. Each of these brief stories were interspersed with the reminder, "Weather...coming up!" It was embarrassingly clear that the station recognized that most people watch local news for...THE WEATHER REPORT!!! Let's make a comparison: The weather report=3 minutes and 30 seconds Clip on local shooting=10 seconds Clip on North Carolina nursing home shooting=10 seconds Duplex Fire=10 seconds Greenhouse that can grow crops on the moon=40 seconds In this way, I find that the imbalance of time spent on the weather vs. the rest of the stories is more of a reflection of audience viewing ...

YWCA Women's Triathlon Race Report- 8/18/13

Preface: I wanted to write this race report while it was all still fresh, but with a four month old and my return to work, this post quickly dropped its priority status.  Luckily, I jotted down some key memories immediately after the race to stimulate my writing later.  Those anecdotes are included here! *** Almost two weeks ago, I crossed the YWCA Women's Sprint Triathlon finish line for third year in a row.  As I raised my hands in the air, the announcer cheered me on, "Molly of Minneapolis- This is her first triathlon post baby Misha!  She just had a baby and triathlon!" This shot truly captures the thrill of the finish line.   Last year, Misha completed the race with me and my mom in the "buddy heat."  Only a few weeks pregnant, I kept my mom company as she worked her way through her first 500 yard open water swim, 15 mile bike ride, and 5k run.  This year, we signed up as a "mother-daughter team" with each of us competing in our own age g...
