Candy corn and apple cider (October 20, 2007)

Tediously trucking my ol' achin' feet through ten, twelve hours days at two different part-time jobs, I went into auto-drive. I didn't complain, but I also didn't really live this past week...or at least live meaningfully. There were, of course (or rather, thank God!), moments of beauty that I can recall (the morning cup of lavender earl gray tea with milk and honey, riding my bike through rain puddles, the savory deliciousness of my boyfriend's famous sauteed rosemary pasta). But, truth be told, I struggled to wrap my mind around anything once I finished working.

I tried to read a library books...I couldn't get through a paragraph. I tried to run. No way. Go to Yoga. No. Call a friend. Couldn't deal with talking about stuff cause stuff was work and work was, well, generally uninspiring.

The dullness of too many hours in too uninspiring of settings tends to extend to my off time. I lose Molly-toodling capabilities.

Post college work is to make money and tide you over for awhile. Its brief and, at least for me, it is disregarded when something more thought provoking and ground shaking appears.

That said, I do love my job at the MIA. Its casual, its artsy, and practical. It's a great job to do while in grad school too, so hopefully, I'll just keep working for a while.

Back to complaining about my achin' feet! Well, my aching came to a standstill last night when I attended a surprise party for one of my college friends. The folks were a cheerful bunch, and the house smelled of spiked apple cider, smoky chili, and apple pie. Callie, my birthday friend, bore a tremendously stunned smile when we all jumped out of different doorways and curtains, yelling surprise!! We had a fire in the backyard and ate as much cheesecake and candy corn as we could stomach. I lingered at Callie's for as long as I could...all the while, realizing the approach of my 6 am work shift.

In the midst of my nasty train-wreck of work week, I had forgotten how much I appreciate my friends. I am so lucky to know such beautiful people.
